### Roman Republic

The year 116 BC was a significant one in the Roman Republic. It was known as the year 638 Ab Urbe condita.

* On June 28, Ptolemy VIII died, and Cleopatra III attempted to make her younger son Ptolemy X Alexander a co-regent.
* However, this was prevented by her mother Cleopatra II, who was supported by the people of Alexandria. As a result, Ptolemy IX remained Pharaoh of Egypt.

### Roman Consulate

The Consulate of Quintus Fabius Maximus Eburnus and Caius Licinius Geta began in Rome on January 1 (638 Ab Urbe condita). This marked the start of a significant period in Roman politics.

### Numidia

In Numidia, Adherbal, the exiled king, sought refuge in Rome. The Senate accepted him and sent ambassadors to negotiate with his rival Yugurta. However, thanks to bribes distributed by Yugurta to some Roman patricians, he was able to avoid being removed from the throne.

### Division of Numidia

The Senate decided that Numidia should be divided into two, and a commission led by Lucius Opimius was sent to execute this decision on the ground. This marked an attempt to limit Yugurta's power and create a more stable situation in Numidia.

### Egypt

After Ptolemy VIII's death, Cleopatra II, Cleopatra III, and Ptolemy IX shared rule over Egypt. However, Cleopatra I died a few months later, leaving the others to continue their reign.

* Ptolemy Alexander remained as ruler of Cyprus.
* Ptolemy Apion was entrusted with Kirenaika.

### Asia
