Holy Roman Empire
2 July: King Henry (VII.) submits in Wimpfen after a futile rebellion to his father, Emperor Frederick II., after he is defeated in battle in the Swiggerstal. Frederick II holds court with the imperial princes in Worms on July 4, deposed him and imprisoned him for life. He is taken to Heidelberg in the Schlossverlies, then to Burg Alerheim im Ries and finally via Friulien to Apulia. Until the end of the year, he will be held in various places. Henry’s allies are largely pardoned.
15 July: Emperor Frederick II. Married in Worms in fourth marriage Isabella of England, the sister of the English King Henry III.
15 August: Emperor Frederick II. On the Reichstag in Mainz issues a Landfriedensgesetz, which is the first Reichsgesetz published not only in Latin, but also in Middle High German. The Mainz Landfriede comprises 29 articles and contains – in addition to criminal provisions – regulations on judicial, coin, customs and transport, on the right of escort and fortification, the ecclesiastical bailiff and the court court. Above all, however, the right to feud is severely restricted, which remains a legitimate means of law enforcement. Furthermore, the office of a permanent court judge at the Royal Court Court will be established.
Frederick II is now trying to build his younger son Konrad as a successor. He appoints him as successor to the deposed Henry with the Duchy of Swabia. However, the princes present at the Hoftag refuse to elect the seven-year-old, who has just arrived from Apulia, as Roman-German co-king.
21 August: On the Mainz Hoftag Otto receives the child in the course of the reconciliation between Staufern and Welfen the former Welfish property in Saxony, the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg as Reichslehen.
