The Rhuddlan Statute enters into force on 3 March. The law enacted by King Edward I of England governs law and administration in conquered Wales. The Act divides the Principality of Wales into the counties of Flintshire, Anglesey, Caernarfonshire, Merionethshire, Cardiganshire and Carmarthenshire. In the counties the offices of sheriff, coroner and bailiff are introduced. A justiciary is appointed for Wales to oversee peacekeeping. For this purpose, English common law is introduced in the Principality of Wales, but in some respects, such as inheritance law, it is adapted to Welsh customs. However, the Statute applies only to the former Principality of Gwynedd, which merges into the new English Principality of Wales, and not to the baronies of the Welsh Marches, in which the Marcher Lords can continue to rule largely autonomously.

August 6: The naval battle at Meloria between the maritime republics of Genoa and Pisa becomes the largest maritime dispute in the Middle Ages. The victorious Genoese gain Corsica, Elba and Sardinia and become a strong maritime power in the Mediterranean for decades. Some 11,000 Pisans go to Genoese captivity, among them probably Rustichello da Pisa, who will meet Marco Polo there years later. This defeat does not completely break the power of Pisa, but in the following time it has more and more problems with maintaining its remaining dominion.
