Politics and World Affairs: The Conflict between King and Pope

The papacy was embroiled in controversy during 1324, particularly with regards to Louis IV, also known as Ludwig le Bavarien, who ruled over the Holy Roman Empire. In March of that year, Pope John XXII excommunicated Louis IV for not seeking papal approval before engaging in conflict against his rival Frederick II.

This move was met with resistance from Louis's supporters and allies, including Henri de la Tour-du-Pin, Bishop of Metz, who sent a plenipotentiary to the Pope to express their discontent.
