The 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne)
The 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), commonly referred to as 160th SOAR(A) or Night Stalkers, is a special operations force of the United States Army that provides helicopter aviation support for special operations forces. This elite unit is responsible for providing air support to special forces in objective reconnaissance, transport, assault, and fire support missions.
Established in response to the failed Operation Eagle Claw attempt in April 1980, which aimed to rescue American hostages held in Tehran, Iran, the creation of the 160th SOAR(A) was a direct result of the investigation conducted by Admiral James L. Holloway III. The investigation highlighted the need for a specialized unit trained for special operations, as Delta Force commandos were transported to Iran using unsuitable US Navy transport helicopters.
The 160th SOAR(A) was formed by combining elements from various aviation battalions, including the 101st Aviation Battalion, the 158th Aviation Battalion, and the 159th Aviation Battalion. The selected pilots underwent intensive night flying training, quickly recognizing the unit as the first night-capacity unit in the US Army.
The Night Stalkers' distinctive patches remained on their uniforms even after the formation of the new unit. Black Hawks and Chinooks continued to operate at Campbell Army Airfield and Saber Army Heliport, while OH-6 Cayuses were hidden on base for "Special Helicopter Operations Company". Operation Honey Badger was cancelled following the release of hostages on President Ronald Reagan's inauguration day.
The 160th SOAR(A) played a significant role in several notable operations during the 1980s and beyond. In 1983, the unit was officially established as the 160ème Bataillon d'aviation, with its first mission taking place shortly after. The following year, the unit participated in the invasion of Grenada.
Throughout their history, the Night Stalkers have demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication to their craft. Their motto, "Night Stalkers Don't Quit," reflects their unwavering commitment to completing missions under challenging conditions. Based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, the 160th SOAR(A) remains a vital component of US special operations forces, providing critical air support for elite units around the world.
The unit's expertise in night flying and low-altitude operations has earned them recognition as one of the premier aviation night fighters in the Army
