Psyche 16: A Metal-Rich Asteroid in the Asteroid Belt
Psyche 16 is one of the ten large asteroids in the asteroid belt, located between Mars and Jupiter. With a diameter greater than 200 kilometers, it is the largest asteroid of type A, discovered by Annibale de Gasparis on March 17, 1852, from Naples, Italy. The asteroid was named after Cypriot mythology, specifically the Greek goddess Psyche.
The first fifty asteroids discovered were given temporary designations until they were assigned permanent names. In 1851, Johann Encke proposed a sequential numbering system for the discovered objects. Psyche 16 was identified using this plan by James Ferguson in 1852 and received a special symbol along with some other asteroids discovered later. The asteroid's designation includes a half-circle with a star.
Psyche 16 is composed of pure iron and nickel, unlike most type A asteroids, which are typically made up of rock and metal. Its surface lacks water or hydrated minerals, consistent with the results showing it to be a metal-rich body. Radar observations have also revealed a small amount of pyroxene on its surface.
The asteroid's size has been estimated using various methods, including IRAS thermal infrared emission observations and multi-chord data sets from 2004, 2010, 2014, and 2019. These estimates suggest an equivalent-volume average diameter of 222±3 km. Psyche 16 is massive enough to have a significant impact on the asteroid belt.
Psyche's mass has ranged from 1.6×10^19 kg to 6.7×10^19 kg. Its rotation period and axis are not well understood, but recent models suggest it rotates around a pole pointed towards the ecliptic coordinates (long, lat) λ = 35°, β = −8°.
Despite its size and metal composition, Psyche 16 does not belong to any asteroid family, which suggests that it may be a separate object. However, this is still a topic of debate among astronomers. Some stony-iron meteorites have been found to share similar spectra with Psyche 16, suggesting a possible connection between the two.
NASA has proposed an unmanned mission to orbit Psyche 16, which would provide valuable insights into its composition and properties. The mission aims to explore the asteroid's surface and subsurface, shedding light on its origins and evolution in the solar system
