The 16th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement
The 16th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) was held from August 30 to September 1, 2012, in Tehran, Iran. This event marked a significant milestone for the organization, which aimed to promote cooperation and understanding among non-aligned nations.
Prior to the summit, two preceding events took place: a "High Officials Meeting" on August 26-27, 2012, and a "Ministerial Meeting" on August 28-29, 2012. These meetings laid the groundwork for the negotiations that would take place during the summit.
The NAM's negotiation framework was based on the "Final Document" adopted during the Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement Coordinating Bureau in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt from May 7-10, 2012. This document outlined key principles for cooperation and conflict resolution among non-aligned nations.
The summit itself featured a range of discussions on various issues, including the Syrian civil war, which Iran aimed to resolve through a new peace resolution. The Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, played a significant role in shaping the agenda, emphasizing the need for cooperation and solidarity among member states.
Mohamed Morsi, the ex-president of NAM and Egyptian President at the time, announced his participation in the summit, highlighting the importance of this event. The conference was also notable for its focus on promoting peace and stability in regions affected by conflict.
The 16th summit marked a significant moment in the history of the Non-Aligned Movement, as it brought together representatives from over 120 countries to discuss key issues affecting global politics and economies.
