The First Edition of the Cyprus Cup: A Historical Overview

The first edition of the Cyprus Cup, also known as the Kypello Kyprou or the Cypriot national cup, was a groundbreaking tournament that took place from November 4, 1934 to November 25, 1934. Organized by the Cyprus Football Association, this inaugural competition marked an exciting milestone in the history of Cypriot football.

Eight teams participated in the tournament, with Anorthosis ultimately emerging as the champion. The competition consisted of three knock-out rounds, with each match played in a single game. In case of parity after 90 minutes, additional periods were planned to determine the winner. This format was used for all encounters throughout the tournament.

The final round took place on November 25, 1934 at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia, where Anorthosis defeated their opponents in two finals against APOEL Nicosia after the first match ended goalless. The team's victory marked a significant achievement in Cypriot football history.

Interestingly, the initial final between the top teams also ended in a 0-0 draw on November 18, 1934, prompting a replay to be played two days later. This unique situation highlights the competitive nature of the tournament and the determination of its participants.

The Cyprus Cup's inaugural edition set an important precedent for future competitions, showcasing the growth and development of football in Cyprus during that period.
