The 1939-40 Cyprus Cup

The sixth edition of the Cyprus Cup, also known as the Kypello Kyprou for its Greek title, was a knockout tournament featuring teams from the Cypriot First Division. The competition consisted of three rounds: quarterfinals, semi-finals, and finals.

All encounters were played in one game, with a draw resulting in an extended 15-minute period to determine a winner. If no winner emerged after this extension, a repeat game was scheduled on the opponent's home ground. This format led to several repetition games throughout the tournament.

The final match took place at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia on February 18, 1940. Initially, the game ended in a 1-1 draw due to heavy rainfall, prompting an interruption and subsequent cancellation of play. However, after a week-long delay, a repeat game was held, with AEL Limassol ultimately emerging victorious.

The defending champion, AEL Limassol, successfully defended their title by defeating Pezoporikos Larnaka in the final. The team's victory marked their second trophy win in the competition.
