January
3 January: King Mihai I, together with Queen Mother Elena, are forced to leave Romania, taking only a few personal possessions with them. King Mihai will return to the country only in 1992, after the fall of the communist regime in Romania, and will receive Romanian citizenship in 1997.
4 January: Burma proclaimed independence from Britain.
January 30: Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi is killed by a Hindu extremist.
January 30: Winter Olympics open in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
February
4 February: Romania: The assets of the Eforia of Civil Hospitals, of the Brancoveneşti Siege, and of the Eforia of the Holy Spiridon of Iași passed into the state.
February 21: Congress to unify the Romanian Communist Party with the Social Democratic Party. Following this unification the Romanian Workers' Party was created, the Secretary General of the Central Committee being elected Gh. Gheorghiu-Dej.
February 24: The dismissal of Lucretiu Pătrăşcanu from the office of Minister of Justice, followed by the arrest, trial and execution of Pătrășcanu.
February 24: The Assembly of Deputies was abolished by law, the Grand National Assembly was convened, and the legislative power passed on to the Government.

March 6: "Alexandru Davila" Theatre was established in Pitesti.
6 March: The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) - specialised UN institution was established.
17 March: The Treaty of Brussels. Agreement signed by the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg establishing a collective defence alliance. It led to the formation of NATO (in 1949) and the European Union.
28 March: The first parliamentary elections since the establishment of communist power. The elections are won by the FDP.
April
April 3: US President Harry Truman signed the Marshall Plan to help European countries affected by World War II.
7 April: Creation of the World Health Organisation (WHO).
April 9: In Palestine, the massacre of Deir Yassin takes place.
April 13: The Grand National Assembly votes on the Constitution of the Romanian People's Republic, Romania's first post-war constitution, which reflects the transitional nature of the period on economic and social terms. A new presidium is elected, led by C.I. Parhon, and a new government, led by Dr. Peter Groza.
27 April: Lucretiu Pătrășcanu was arrested on charges of conspiracy, along with Lena Constanta, Elena Pătrășcanu, Bellu Zilber and Harry Brauner.

14 May: Establishment of FC Dinamo Bucharest, which was originally, after being taken over by the Ministry of Interior, called Unirea Trilcolor Bucharest, and after merging with the Hammer of Bucharest, was named Dinamo A.
14 May: UN Resolution terminating the British mandate on Palestine and territorial division
