1953 was a year that began on Thursday according to the Gregorian calendar. It marked the start of the second millennium, the 53rd year of the 20th century, and the fourth year of the 1950s decade.
In January, several significant events took place. The Asian Socialist Conference opened in Rangoon, Burma, while Estonian émigrés established a government-in-exile in Oslo. On January 13, Donzel McCray, a 47-year-old man from West Virginia, strapped dynamite to his waist and turned himself into a human bomb at a magistrate's court.
The month also saw the election of Marshal Josip Broz Tito as President of Yugoslavia, while the CIA-sponsored Robertson Panel first met to discuss the UFO phenomenon. In East Germany, Foreign Minister Georg Dertinger was arrested for espionage, and British security forces in West Germany arrested seven members of a communist group.
In the United States, January 24 marked a significant television event: 71.1% of all television sets were tuned into I Love Lucy to watch Lucy give birth to Little Ricky, with more viewers than those watching Dwight Eisenhower's inauguration the next day. The North Sea flood of 1953, which began on February 1, killed 1,836 people in the southwestern Netherlands, particularly in Zeeland, as well as 307 in the United Kingdom and several hundred at sea.
February saw continued flooding from the North Sea, with hundreds more deaths reported. On February 3, a massacre took place in São Tomé, where hundreds of native Creoles were killed by the colonial administration and Portuguese landowners. In the United States, President Dwight D. Eisenhower announced the end of neutralization for Formosa (Taiwan) on February 1.
In Spain, the reform of the baccalaureate led to a separation between sciences and letters in schools. The San Mamés football field was extended in Bilbao on February 7. A Constitution valid for three years was enacted in Egypt on February 10. In Iran, an earthquake left 800 dead on February 12.
In Yugoslavia, the National Assembly adopted a new constitution on February 13. Spain also saw significant events: the Ministry of Information and Tourism decreed the creation of the National Film Library, while President Juan Domingo Perón advocated for a union between Argentina and other countries in South America.
