Events in 1958 in Turkey

In 1958, significant events took place in Turkey. The country was governed by President Celal Bayar and Prime Minister Adnan Menderes, who led the ruling Democrat Party (DP). The main opposition party at that time was the Republican People's Party (CHP), led by İsmet İnönü.

One of the notable incidents occurred on January 16 when nine army officers were arrested for plotting against the government. Additionally, a commuter boat called Üsküdar sank on March 1, resulting in most of its passengers being students. The ban on broadcasting statements made by opposition leader İsmet İnönü was also enforced on June 2.

The Cyprus dispute began to gain public attention with a series of demonstrations starting from June 7. This partial mobilization followed the revolution in Iraq that took place earlier in July, leading to some level of national unrest.
