1968 Cypriot Presidential Election
The 1968 Cypriot presidential election was held on 25 February 1968, to elect the President of Cyprus for a second term.
Electoral System
The President of the Republic of Cyprus was elected directly by the people through universal and secret ballot. The President's term of office was five years, commencing on the day of its establishment before the House of Representatives, where the elected president would give a renewed assurance.
In cases where only one candidate applied for nomination, they were declared elected President of the Republic of Cyprus without a vote. However, when multiple candidates were involved, the candidate securing more than 50% of the valid votes was elected. If no candidate achieved the required majority, a run-off election would be held between the two candidates who received the most votes on the respective day of the next week.
Results
The incumbent President Makarios III was re-elected with an overwhelming 96.3% of the votes, defeating his right-wing opponent Takis Evdokas with ease. Voter turnout was 93.5%.
Separate Elections for Vice Presidency
Separate elections were held for the vice presidency, which were won by Fazıl Küçük.
