1970 Cypriot legislative election

1970 Cypriot Legislative Election

Background

The 1970 parliamentary elections were held on 5 July 1970 for the election of 35 members of the House of Representatives for the Second Parliamentary Period.

Political System

Cyprus is a single democracy with a presidential system of governance. The President of the Republic of Cyprus, directly elected, is also head of state and head of government, and chairs the Executive Cabinet. However, proportional elections for the House of Representatives facilitate multi-partyism, where the elected president's party usually joins other smaller parties to form a co-operation government that adapts to parliamentary changes after parliamentary elections.

Election Framework

The 50 seats of the House of Representatives were elected by six multiple constituencies, with the number of seats distributed according to the population of each district. Of the 50 seats, 35 were elected by the Greek Cypriots and 15 by the Turkish Cypriots.

Results

The election results showed that the United Party (Eniaion party) won 15 seats out of 35, despite receiving fewer votes than the Progressive Party of the Working People. The AKEL party received a higher number of votes but did not win as many seats.
