1 January: Ban on cigarette advertising on United States television
January 2: Cigarette advertising is now also banned on radio in the USA.
January 7: During the Vietnam War, a plane takes off for the last time for a spray operation with the defoliant Agent Orange.
January 25: While President Milton Obote is not in the country, Army Chief Idi Amin takes power in Uganda with a bloodless coup.

February 2: The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands comes into being, one of the first international conventions on environmental protection.
7 February: Introduction of active and passive voting rights for women in Switzerland by men’s referendum
February 8: Federal Defence Minister Helmut Schmidt liberalizes wearing long hair in the German Bundeswehr with the hairnet decree.
February 8: South Vietnamese ground troops launch Operation Lam Son 719 in the Vietnam War. By invading neighbouring Laos, they want to cripple the supply routes of the Ho Chi Minh Trail and politically force North Vietnam to the negotiating table.
February 11: The Seabed Treaty will be signed in Washington D.C., London and Moscow. The negotiated agreement prohibits the stationing of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction at seabed. It shall take effect on the 18th day following the date of the ratifications. In force in May 1972.
12 February: Framework agreement on development aid between the Federal Republic of Germany and Rwanda

21 February: In Vienna, the Convention on Psychotropic Substances is concluded, an international agreement aimed at reducing private drug use and regulating its use for scientific and medical purposes.
