1991 Cypriot Legislative Election
1991 Cypriot Legislative Election
Background
The 1991 parliamentary elections were held on 19 May 1991 for the election of 56 members of the House of Representatives for the VI Parliamentary Period.
Political System
Cyprus is a single democracy with a presidential system of governance. The President of the Republic of Cyprus, directly elected in the middle of the legislative period, serves as both head of state and head of government, chairing the Executive Cabinet. However, proportional elections for the House of Representatives facilitate multi-partyism, where the elected president's party usually joins other smaller parties to form a co-operation government that adapts to parliamentary changes after parliamentary elections.
Electoral System
The 80 seats of the House of Representatives are divided among six multiple constituencies, with the number of seats distributed according to the population of each district. Of these 80 places, 56 were elected by proportional representation in the 1991 election.
Results
The Democratic Rally won 20 of the 56 seats, making it the party with the most members in the House of Representatives. The Emekçi Public's Forwarder Party was the second-largest party, but no further information is available on its performance.
Voter Turnout
Voter turnout for the election was reported to be 93%.
