1998 Cypriot Presidential Election
The 1998 presidential election in Cyprus was held in two rounds on February 8 and 15, 1998.
Electoral System
The President of the Republic of Cyprus is elected directly by the people through universal and secret ballot. The President's term of office is five years, beginning on the day of its establishment before the House of Representatives, where the elected president gives a renewed assurance.
According to the electoral system, when only one candidate applies for nomination, they are declared elected President of the Republic of Cyprus without a vote. When there are multiple candidates, the candidate who secures more than 50% of the valid votes is elected. If no candidate achieves the required majority, a re-election is held on the respective day of the next week between the two candidates who received the most votes.
First Round
The first round of the election was held on February 8, 1998. Georgios Iacovou, representing the Progressive Party of the Working People of Cyprus and supported by the Democratic Party, led in the initial count. However, he ultimately lost to Glafkos Clerides (Democratic Rally) in the second round.
Second Round
The second round was held on February 15, 1998. In a tight contest, Glafcos Clerides secured a victory with 50.8% of the valid votes, defeating Georgios Iacovou.
Voter Turnout
Voter turnout for the election was reported to be 92%.
Result
Glafkos Clerides was declared president after winning the second round of the election.
