1998 Northern Cypriot Parliamentary Election
The 1998 Northern Cypriot parliamentary election was held on 6 December 1998 in Northern Cyprus to elect members of the Assembly of the Republic.
Electoral System
At the time of the election, Northern Cyprus was divided into five constituencies, with a total of 50 members elected by proportional representation. Voters could cast as many votes in their district as there were seats available.
Results
The National Unity Party (UBP) emerged as the largest party in the Assembly, winning 24 of the 50 seats with 40.4% of the vote. The UBP then formed a coalition with the Democrat Party (DP).
According to official results, out of 120,758 eligible voters, 106,331 cast their ballots, representing a participation rate of 88.05%. Only four political parties passed the 5% threshold required for representation in the parliament: the National Unity Party, the Republican Turkish Party, the Democrat Party, and the Community Liberation Party.
