1 August Social Resistance Holiday is one of the official holidays in Northern Cyprus, celebrated annually due to the capture of Cyprus by the Ottoman Empire in 1571, the establishment of the Turkish Resistance Organization in 1958, and the establishment of the Security Forces Command in 1976.
The commemoration and sports activities are organized openly for the public. The ceremonies held include participation from the Commander of the Security Forces and military personnel as well as various associations, institutions, and organizations. A commemoration ceremony is held at the Martyrs Monument in Nicosia.
