The 2005 Sports List describes sporting events that occurred in 2005.
General developments
2005 was declared the International Year of Sport and Physical Education as a means to promote education, health, development and peace (UN Resolution 58/5). The 117th session of the International Olympic Committee was held in Singapore on July 6. The main issue of the session was the choice of the venue for the XXX Summer Olympic Games in 2012. Five cities were nominated for the 2012 Olympics at the final stage: London, Madrid, Moscow, New York and Paris. In the first round of voting, Moscow dropped out of the candidates, in the second – New York, in the third – Madrid. In the final round of voting, IOC members chose between London and Paris. According to all forecasts, Paris was considered the favorite. However, at 11:49 UTC, IOC President Jacques Rogge announced London as the venue for the 2012 Olympics. London hosted the Summer Olympics twice in 1908 and 1948. London is the first city to host the Summer Olympics for the third time.

World Team Championship
The World Chess Team Championship will be held from 1 to 11 November in Beersheba (Israel). Nine teams take part in the championship: Armenia, Georgia, Israel, China (men’s team), China (women’s team), Cuba, USA, Russia and Ukraine. Initially, the Egyptian team was invited from Africa, but they refused. Zambia also refused to participate in Africa.

World chess champion Veselin Topalov said that he is not going to play a match for the world championship against Vladimir Kramnik. Topalov believes that Kramnik has no moral right to demand such a match, as he was invited to play in San Luis, but refused. In addition, Kramnik currently has a seventh rating in the world, which is less than Topalov’s rating by 60 points, which is a lot, it is a different class.

FIDE World Chess Championship 2005
The FIDE World Chess Championship was held from September 27 to October 16 in San Luis, Argentina. Eight grandmasters took part in the championship: Vishwanathan Anand (India, rating as of July 1, 2005 - 2788), Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria, 2788), Peter Leko (Hungary, 2763), Peter Svidler (Russia, 2738), Judith Polgar (Hungary, 2735), Michael Adams (England, 2719), Alexander Morozevich (Russia, 2707) and Rustam Kasimjanov (Uzbekistan, 2670). Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik were invited to participate in the tournament, but they refused. Kasparov ended his career as a professional chess player. Kramnik believes that he is the current World Champion (unrecognized by FIDE), and intends to play a match with the winner of the tournament in San Luis.
The tournament was won by Veselin Topalov, who scored 6.5 points out of 7 in the first round, and drew all his games in the second. Having played on October 13, in the penultimate round, a draw with Rustam Kasymjanov, Bulgarian grandmaster Veselin
