Thursday:
An Israeli raid, targeting a local leader of Hamas' armed wing in Rafah near the Egyptian border, killed four Palestinians, including a woman and injured some 40 people, while one of Hamas' main leaders, Nizar Rayan, was killed in the northern Gaza Strip in another Israeli air raid.
Since the beginning of the Israeli "hard lead" offensive, more than 400 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip and nearly others have been injured, making it the most deadly ever launched by Israel in the Palestinian territories since their occupation in . Although it targets the Islamist Hamas movement, which has controlled the Gaza Strip since then, and the armed groups firing rockets against Israel, a quarter of the victims are civilians, including dozens of women and children, according to UN reports.
Friday:
The Israeli bombings continued striking before dawn 15 houses belonging to Hamas activists, wounding 12. The inhabitants of the bombed area were warned by Israeli telephone calls and a warning shot.
Several hundred foreign nationals (Russian, American, Norwegian, Turkish, Ukrainian and Belarusian) fled the bombings via the Erez crossing, "specially reopened" by Israel "to allow foreign nationals to leave the Gaza Strip" on the seventh day of the Israeli offensive.
At the injunction of the Israeli Supreme Court, 8 foreign journalists are allowed to visit the Gaza Strip whose access to the international press has been prohibited since the start of the offensive against Hamas, the Foreign Press Association said.
The World Food Programme denounces a "dreadful" food situation in Gaza, according to the death toll of 420 Palestinians, men, women and children. It estimates at 9 million dollars (6.4 million euros) its immediate needs "to meet the additional food needs due to the intensification of the fighting [...] The scarcity of wheat means that the majority of mills and bakeries have ceased to operate in Gaza, and bread, a staple of the Palestinians, is sorely lacking."
