1 January
Greece takes the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Latvia adopts the euro as a current currency and Andorra starts coining own euro coins. At the same time, they change the national façade to their coins Belgium, Vatican City and the Netherlands.
January 7: Cold record in the United States of America and South of Canada, with temperatures down to -53 °C in the State of Montana.
16 January: the referendum for the approval of the new Constitution takes place in Egypt, almost three years after the constitutional referendum that had ratified the previous one: it is voted favourably by more than 90%. The referendum sees the participation of 38.5% of the electorate.
21 January: the Fiat S.p.A. acquires the remaining 41.5% of the Chrysler Group's shares, thus holding the total control of the U.S. company and becoming the seventh most important automotive group in the world.
22 January: The Geneva 2 Peace Conference is held in Montreux, which the UN wanted to seek a political understanding of the Syrian crisis.

7 – 23 February: XXII Winter Olympic Games in Soči.
13 February: Belgium becomes the first state in the world to legalize euthanasia without any age limit.
February 14: the President of the Italian Council, Enrico Letta, resigns in the hands of the President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano.

In Ukraine, former Prime Minister Julija Tymoshenko, leader of the so-called Orange Revolution, was released after two and a half years in prison.
Matteo Renzi is appointed President of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic.
28 February: Russia militarily invades the Crimean Peninsula, an autonomous region of Ukraine.

March 8: the Malaysia Airlines 370 plane disappears during a flight to Beijing with 239 people; on August 5, 2015 some debris found on Reunion Island are confirmed to be those of the flight.
9 March: political elections in North Korea. Kim Jong-un, the only candidate on the list, is elected by MPs with 100% votes.
16 March: parliamentary elections in Serbia.
17 March: following the referendum of 16 March, Crimea is annexed to Russia with 96.6% votes in favour.
24 March: the United Kingdom, the United States, Italy, Germany, France, Japan and Canada, during an extraordinary meeting, decide to suspend Russia from the G8.

5 April: Presidential elections in Afghanistan.

takes place at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in the city of New Orleans, Louisiana the 30th edition of Wrestlemania where for the first time The Undertaker has been defeated in the aforementioned PPV since 1991, with Brock Lesnar interrupting the "The Streak" at 21 victories.
