The Algarve Cup 2016 was the 23. Playing of this important tournament series for women's national football teams and took place from 2nd to 9th March 2016, as in previous years, took place at various venues in the Algarve, the southernmost region of Portugal. Eight teams were registered for the tournament, including none of the previous tournament winners.

Of the teams that previously participated in all the events and were also among the organizers, Norway and Sweden did not participate, as the qualification tournament for the Olympic Games took place at the same time. For the same reason, Switzerland, which participated for the first time in 2015, could not participate. Furthermore, China and Asian champions Japan were missing, who participated in the simultaneous Asian Olympic qualification.

The three first-placed teams in the last USA (World Champion), France and Germany (European Champion) and England (Cyprus Cup winner of the previous year) instead contested the first-ever SheBelieves Cup in the USA at the invitation of the USA. Brazil, which also took part for the first time in 2015, was the only participant in the top 10 of the FIFA world rankings. With Canada, one of the two record winners of the Cyprus Cup took part, which again took place parallel to the Algarve Cup as in previous years, this time only with eight teams and with the Italians ranked 13th as the best-placed European team in the FIFA world rankings. Canada became the first team to win both the Algarve Cup and the Cyprus Cup.

For the first time, the first four places were taken by teams from four different confederations (CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, UEFA and OFC).
