Imperial crisis of the 3rd century in the Roman Empire: The Goths, accompanied by the Herulians, set off from the north bank of the Sea of Azov into the Aegean Sea. Among other things, Crete, Athens, Rhodes and Cyprus are plundered by them.
Autumn: In Herakleia Pontike, the prince of Palmyra, Septimius Odaenathus, is killed. His assassination was probably commissioned by the Roman Emperor Gallienus. Odaenathus’ son Vaballathus inherits his title “King of Kings”, which makes him a virtually self-sufficient ruler over the Roman province of Syria, but not the special powers that Gallienus had conferred on his father. Due to his minority, his mother Zenobia takes over the real power as regent and soon goes on a confrontational course with the Romans.
Died
Septimius Odaenathus, Roman commander
Septimius Herodianus, son of Odaenathus
