In the Battle of Velbuzd, King Michael III Shishman suffered defeat by the Serbian army. At the head of 300 Catalans, Stefan Dushan defeated the king's Tatar Guard, and Mikhail Shishman died three days later (31 July 1330) of his wounds and in captivity.
