Monaco, San Marino and the Vatican are not among the sending countries because they are not members of the European Union. This coin is the first commemorative coin issued by Cyprus and Malta.
Technical specifications
These coins have the same technical characteristics as the other 2 euro coins and bear the second version of the common reverse of these coins.
Description
The centre of the coin illustrates a stylized human silhouette whose right arm is extended by the euro symbol. The name of the issuing country appears in the upper part, while the indication 1999-2009 and the translation of the acronym EMU appear in the lower part. The outer ring of the coin contains the twelve stars of the European flag.
An exception exists for Luxembourg, where the law requires that the portrait of the Grand Duke appear on all the pieces, so the portrait of the Grand Duke appears watermarked on the piece. In the Netherlands, a similar law requiring the Head of State (the King or Queen) to appear on all exhibits, has been amended to participate in this commemoration, this amendment is valid only for joint broadcasts.
