2nd Commando Brigade (Turkey)

The 2nd Commando Brigade is one of the 12 commando brigades designated in the Turkish Land Forces. It is under the 4th Corps and is headquartered at Bolu.

History

The brigade was first involved in the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, where it fought alongside the 1st Commando Brigade and Amphibious Marine Brigade in the battle of Kyrenia. The Turkish forces successfully took control of the city, resulting in a significant victory for the Turkish military. For its involvement in this operation, the brigade was awarded the Turkish Armed Forces Medal of Distinguished Courage and Self-Sacrifice.

The 2nd Commando Brigade has also been involved in operations against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). It was awarded its second Turkish Armed Forces Medal of Distinguished Courage and Self-Sacrifice for its role in this conflict, which began in 1984. The brigade's achievements in combating the PKK have been recognized both domestically and internationally.

Operations

In addition to its involvement in the Cyprus War and operations against the PKK, the 2nd Commando Brigade has also participated in other military operations. In 1974, it served in the Cyprus Court, and a potential operation in Syria was discussed in Hatay. The brigade's capabilities and professionalism have been demonstrated through its participation in various military exercises and operations.

Modern Era

As of 2010, the 2nd Commando Brigade had become fully professionalized. In 2020, it participated in the Baku Victory Parade on Freedom Square, celebrating the Azerbaijani victory in the Nagorno-Karabakh War. The brigade's involvement in this parade marked a significant moment for the Turkish military, highlighting its continued commitment to international cooperation and military excellence.

Awards and Decorations

The 2nd Commando Brigade has been awarded several honors for its service and achievements. In addition to the two Turkish Armed Forces Medals of Distinguished Courage and Self-Sacrifice mentioned earlier, the brigade has also received the Superior Cesaret and Waiver Medal. These awards recognize the bravery and sacrifice demonstrated by the brigade's personnel in various military operations.
