### Asia

* September 5: Xianzong, Emperor Tang of China (r. 805-820), began his reign.
* Saichō, a Japanese monk who had returned from China, reported to Japan a copy of the "Sūtra du Lotus", the founding text of the Tendai doctrines. He made his monastery of Mount Hiei a sanctuary of the new Buddhist sect and attracted many followers, becoming the highest moral authority in Japan at the time.
* In India, Nagabhata II, king of Pratihara d'Avanti (r. 805-833), entered into alliances with the kings of Andhra, Sindh, Berar, and Kalinga to counter the Rashtrakuta in the south and the Arabs of Sindh in the west.

### Europe

* January 6: The Palatine chapel of Aix-la-Chapelle was consecrated by Pope Leo III.
* March 30: Saint Ludger was consecrated as the first bishop of Münster.
* May: A plot against the Emir of Córdoba, Al-Hakam, was discovered and 72 notables were crucified. This led to a strong emotional response in the region.
* December 24: Charlemagne issued the Diedenhofen Capitular, which forbade the cities mentioned therein from engaging in arms trade with the Slavs.

* Muslims conquered Cyprus from Byzantium.
