Administrative Divisions of Cyprus

Administrative and Territorial Division of Cyprus

The Republic of Cyprus is divided into six administrative provinces or districts, which are further subdivided into municipalities and communities.

History

After the Turkish invasion of 1974 and the occupation of much of the territories of the Republic of Cyprus by the Turkish troops, the entire province of Kyrenia, most of the province of Famagusta, much of the province of Nicosia, and a small part of Larnaca are under occupation. Although the territory of some municipalities and communities is in the occupied part of the state and they have ceased to exercise their ordinary municipal and community powers, they retain their legal status in the free areas of the Republic, where they have their seat.

Districts

The six provinces or districts of the Republic of Cyprus are:

1. **Province of Famagusta** ( Greek: Επαρχία Αμμοχώστου, Turkish: Gazimağusa Bölgesi)
2. **Province of Kyrenia** (Greek: Επαρχία Κερύνειας, Turkish: Girne Bölgesi) - partially occupied by Turkey
3. **Province of Larnaca** (Greek: Επαρχία Λάρνακας, Turkish: Larnaka Bölgesi)
4. **Province of Limassol** (Greek: Επαρχία Λεμεσού, Turkish: Lefkoşa Bölgesi)
5. **Province of Nicosia** (Greek: Επαρχία Λευκωσίας, Turkish: Lefkoşa Bölgesi) - partially occupied by Turkey
6. **Province of Paphos** (Greek: Επαρχία Πάφου, Turkish: Baf Bölgesi)

Each district has its own administrative capital, which is the metropolitan municipality of the same name.

Terminology

The terms "district" and "province" are often used interchangeably to refer to these administrative divisions. However, some sources may use the term "diocese" or "eparchy" ( Greek: επαρχία) to refer to these divisions, particularly in the context of their historical development.
