Classification

Aegaeobuthus cyprius, also known as the Cyprus scorpion, is a species of scorpion in the family Buthidae.

Distribution and Habitat

This species is endemic to Cyprus. It was discovered using molecular phylogenetics in 2000.

Description

Males measure from 34 to 40 mm (1.3 to 1.6 in) in length, while females range from 36 to 42 mm (1.4 to 1.7 in).

Systematics and Taxonomy

The species was described under the protonym Mesobuthus cyprius by Gantenbein and Kropf in 2000. However, it is now placed in the genus Aegaeobuthus by Kovařík in 2019.

Etymology

The name of this species refers to its place of discovery, Cyprus.

Original Publication

Gantenbein, Kropf, Largiadèr & Scholl (2000) described the species in their paper "Molecular and morphological evidence for the presence of a new buthid taxon (Scorpiones: Buthidae) on the island of Cyprus" published in the Swiss Journal of Zoology.
