Anamur

Anamour or Windmur is a town and municipality in Mersin Province on the Mediterranean coast of southern Turkey, situated between Antalya and the city of Mersin.

Etymology

The name "Anamour" has been mutated from ancient Greek (Latin: Anemurium), meaning "windmill".

Geography

Anamur is located at the westernmost part of Mersin Province and borders on the west with Antalya Province, on the north with Karaman Province, and on the east with Bozyazı district. The Mediterranean Sea forms a natural border to the south, from where the island of Cyprus can be seen in clear weather. The city centre is approximately 75 km away from Cyprus.

History

The city was founded by the Phoenicians. It was then occupied by the Assyrians and Hittites. During the Hittite period, Anamur was an important settlement. After the Hittites, the city came under the domination of various empires, including the Kizs, Hitites, Assyrians, and Persians.
