Ashok Gehlot

Ashok Gehlot (born May 3, 1951, Jodhpur, Rajasthan) is an Indian politician and the current Chief Minister of Rajasthan. Born in Marwar to Lakshman Singh Gehlot, Ashok Gehlot earned a Bachelor's degree in Science and Law and a Master's degree in Economics.

Personal Life
Ashok Gehlot is the son of magician Lakshman Singh Gehlot, who traveled across the country performing magic tricks. He belongs to the Mali caste. His father was a two-term president of Jodhpur Municipal Corporation, a one-term vice-president, and a mining contractor. Ashok Gehlot has a Bachelor's degree in Science and Law and a Master's degree in Economics. He married Sunita Gehlot and has a son, Vibhav Gehlot, who is also a politician and contested the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Jodhpur.

Political Background
Active in politics and social service since his student days, Ashok Gehlot was elected to the 7th Lok Sabha (1980-84) from the Jodhpur parliamentary constituency in 1980. He represented the Jodhpur parliamentary constituency in the 8th Lok Sabha (1984-89), 10th Lok Sabha (1991-96), 11th Lok Sabha (1996-98), and 12th Lok Sabha (1998-99).

Elected from the Saradarpura (Jodhpur) assembly constituency, Ashok Gehlot became a member of the 11th Rajasthan Legislative Assembly in February 1999. He was re-elected to the same assembly constituency for the 12th Rajasthan Legislative Assembly on December 4, 2003, and again for the 13th Rajasthan Legislative Assembly on December 8, 2008. He was re-elected to the 14th Rajasthan Legislative Assembly and became Chief Minister.

Central Minister
He served as a Central Minister in the cabinets of Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and P.V. Narasimha Rao. Ashok Gehlot has been a Central Minister three times. When Indira Gandhi was Prime Minister, Ashok Gehlot served as Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism and Civil Aviation from September 2, 1982 to February 7, 1984. He then became the Sports Parliamentary Secretary. From February 7, 1984 to October 31, 1984, he worked in the Ministry of Sports, and again from November 12, 1984 to December 31, 1984.

Due to his work style, Ashok Gehlot was made a State Minister in the Central Government. From December 31, 1984 to September 26, 1985, he served as Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism and Civil Aviation. He was then made Parliamentary Secretary for Textiles. This ministry was under the previous Prime Minister's control, and Ashok Gehlot was given independent charge of it. Ashok Gehlot held this portfolio from June 21, 1991 to January 18, 1993.

Rajasthan Government Minister
From June 1989 to November 1989, Ashok Gehlot served as a Minister in the Rajasthan government, holding portfolios for Home and Jan Swasthya Abhiyantriki Department.

All India Congress Committee
From January 2004 to July 16, 2004, Ashok Gehlot was a Special Invitee Member of the All India Congress Committee.
