Bucharest
Etymology and History
Bucharest (Romanian: Bucureşti) is Romania's capital and largest city, located on the banks of the Dâmbovița River. The name "Bucharest" comes from the personal name "Bukur", which means "cute" or "beautiful" in Albanian, with the suffix "-esti" indicating the belonging of the village. This name is preserved in medieval Latin documents as Cetatia Dambovitci ("the city of Dâmbovica"), and has been used since 1459.
The first mention of Bucharest dates back to 1459, although it is believed that the city existed before this time. The personal name "Bukur" is common in Romanian toponymy, and is also found in its "pure" form - Bukur, Bukura.
History
Bucharest became the capital of Romania in 1862 and has since been the country's cultural, commercial, and industrial centre. During the interwar period, it was known as "Little Paris" (Micul Paris) due to its elegant architecture and refined elite. However, many buildings and districts in the historic center were severely damaged or destroyed by World War II, earthquakes, and Nicolae Ceaușescu's "systemization" program.
Architecture
The architecture of Bucharest is a mixture of neoclassical, interwar (Bauhaus and art déco), communist period, and modern era styles. Despite the damage caused by war and urban planning policies, many historic buildings have survived and are still standing today.
Demographics
As of 2023, the population of Bucharest itself is approximately 1.8 million inhabitants, while the city and its suburbs have a total population of over 2.4 million people.
Note: I've kept the original dates and numbers from both sources, but please note that the second source does not provide a specific date for the population figure, so I've used "2023" as a placeholder. If you need to update this information, please let me know.
