Classification
Bufotes variabilis is a species of frog in the Bufonidae family.
Distribution
This species has a wide geographical distribution, found in:
* Northern Germany, Denmark, and southern Sweden
* Greece, Cyprus, and Turkey
* Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia
* Lebanon and Syria
* Iraq and Iran
* Kazakhstan and southern Russia
Specimens from Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen are not clearly attached to this species, and may be either Bufotes variabilis, Bufotes ballangeri, or Bufotes viridis.
Taxonomy
The species was first described by Pallas in 1769 as part of his work "Spicilegia zoologica". Müller (1776) also provided a description of the species in his book "Zoologiae Danicae Prodromus".
