--- CONTENT ---
Byron Theodoropoulos (1920 - 2010) was a Greek diplomat and writer.

Life Story
He was born in Athens and studied law in the department of law at the Kapodistrian University of Athens. He entered the diplomatic corps in 1946 and in 1955 he was placed consul in Constantinople, in which he experienced the events of the Septembrians. He was also a general consul in Alexandria and in 1965 became director of Turkish and Cypriot affairs. An ambassador was then appointed to Canada as well as a permanent representative to the European Community and NATO. In 1976-1981 he served as permanent secretary general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and at the same time chairman of the Central Committee for Negotiations on the accession of our country to the European Community.

From the diplomatic corps he was appointed ambassador for honor in 1981. After his retirement he was involved in writing books, and his book The Turks and We (1988) was awarded by the Academy of Athens. He had also been awarded an honorary doctorate at the University of Athens. In 2009 he was nominated for the seat of the Athens Academy's Theory and Practice of Diplomacy along with Costas Elianos without being elected. Shortly before the Academy meeting, the president of the association of retired diplomatic servants, Ambassador Alexandris, asked for a resolution of support for Theodoropoulos to be issued meeting the convention's refusal. After the election theodoropoulos accused Kostis Stefanopoulos, according to a letter from the latter, of pursuing him in all ways. Kostis Stefanopoulos in his own letter in a daily newspaper denied that he intervened in the election process to fill the vacant seat of Athens Academy in favour of Elianos.

He died on 25 February 2010 in Athens. Statements on his death were made by Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas, as well as Dora Bakoyannis.
