Nomenclature
The scientific name of the genus, Mareca, has Portuguese root and originating in Brazil, where the term marréco is called small-sized ducks, in general. Variations of the same word are the terms marica and marcia.

The Latin term strepera in the scientific name of the species, comes from the verb strepo (strepere, strepui, strepitus) "producing loud sound, echo confused". In one version, this verb has a Greek root and comes from the "turn", specifically from the strangular sound that makes some door when it turns to its rotors (medesses). Therefore, the naming of the species is due to the sound that articulates the bird, although its voice is not at all strung and poor, rather much like human male (see Voice). In this sense it is more "successful" the performance of "voice, chatter" for the term strepera (see other names).

The English folk name of the bird, gadwall, has unknown origin but probably comes from [Anas] querquedula (kirkiri). Spelling is first recorded to Willughby in 1676, and has been generally adopted by later writers. Merrett, in 1667, said it comes from the word gaddel (Pinax rerum naturalium Britannicarum, p. 180), using bird traders.

The Greek popular name capaklis has Turkish origin: kapak = cover, cap, kapakli = covered, covered, but the reason for naming is unknown.

Systematic Classification
The systematic taxon taxon is problematic at genus level. The species was first described by Linnaeus, under the name Anas strepera (Europe, 1758). In 1824, English naturalist T. Stephens (1792 – 1852) proposed the genus Mareca, but was reclassified to the original genus in 1886, by AOU. Then the same taxonomic operator transferred it to the genus Chaulelasmus, to be retransferred to Anas, until 2014. Since then, it has been proposed to transfer it to the genus Mareca, with the new taxonomic being followed by very important taxonomic bodies such as Howard & Moore (4th ed.), Avivase, HBW, IUCN etc. However, other authorities such as ITIS, IOC, AOU (7th ed.) have not accepted this change, at least yet.

Hybrids
Capacles exhibit intense hybridisms with many other species within the Anatids, such as: Mareca strepera x Tadorna tadorna (barbara), M. strepera x Anas platyrrhynchos (green-headed), M. s. x Anas acuta, M. s. x Anas undulata, M. s. x Anas superciliosa, M. s. x Lophodies cucullatus, etc.

Geographical spread
The species shows a wide range of distribution in large territories of Eurasia, Africa and North America (Palaioarkic
