Carnelian

================

Carnelian is an opaque to faintly translucent, two-colored red-white to orange-white banded variety of chalcedony, a type of quartz in fibrous form.

Composition and Classification

Carnelian belongs to the Tequitite mineral group (Silicas in a spatial structure) and has the chemical composition SiO2. It is a microcrystalline variant of calcedonia, a mineral of the quartz group.

Color

The color of carnelian is determined by the quantity and type of iron compound present. Iron oxide creates an orange-red hue, while iron hydroxide gives the stone a brown tone. The heat treatment of iron hydroxide can cause the formation of red or reddish-brown colors. Carnelian's color range includes:

* Dark red to flesh and light red to almost pink shades
* Uniform brown, spotted, or spilled variations
* Lighter colors with an almost pink appearance

Microscopic Structure

The finely crystalline structure of carnelian becomes visible only under the microscope. This characteristic distinguishes it from other types of quartz that are usually transparent and have easily identifiable crystals.

Uses

Carnelian is used exclusively for the production of gemstones, valued for its unique color patterns and microcrystalline structure.

Etymology

The name "carnelian" comes from the Middle Latin word "carneolus," which means "little flesh." This refers to the stone's reddish-brown color, reminiscent of meat.
