Omonia Nicosia participates in the European football cups from 1965-66. It is the second Cypriot team with most participations in European events. It counts two entries in the Europa League groups and one participation in the Conferens League groups.
Historical overview and major events
Omonia participates in the European football cups from 1965–66. For a long time it was the Cypriot team with most participations in European events. In fact, he had created a record of consecutive entries (17) for a Cypriot team (1975–76 until 1991–92).
He participated for the first time in the 1965-66 Cup, facing Olympiacos Piraeus, from whom he was eliminated. The first qualification came to the 1972–73 Champions Cup, where it eliminated Irish Waterford United. In 1974–75, having acquired a right to participate in the 1974–75 Champions Cup he retired due to the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.
In the 1970s he managed to secure yet another qualification, over FA Red Boyce Differdanz at the 1979–80 Champions Cup. In the next round he faced the mighty in the then Ajax AFK era. In the first match, in the Netherlands, Omonia was defeated 10–0. However, in the rematch at the Makario Stadium Omonia won Ajax 4–0, causing bivalve remarks from the European media. In the 1980s Omonia secured two more qualification. In the 1985–86 Champions Cup he eliminated Maltese Rabat Ajax FK and in the 1987–88 Champions Cup Irish Samrock Rovers.
Since the 1990s, Omonia, like the other Cypriot groups, ensured several qualification. However, he could not rule out more than one opponent per period. This stopped in 2008–09, participating in the 2008–2009 UEFA Cup. After excluding FK Milan Kumanovo in the first qualifier, he managed to rule out AEK in the second qualifier Athens, which he won 1-0 away. In the next round he faced Manchester City from which he was eliminated with two defeats with a narrow score (1–2).
Joining the Europa League playoffs 2010–11, she was found very close to her entry into the competition groups. Although she had been defeated 0-1 at her headquarters by FK Metalist Harkiv, in the rematch she preceded 2–0. However, it was tied to 2–2 and eliminated.
