Background
The first Pancyprian Athletics Games were organized in 1896 by G. S. "The Olympias", founded in 1892 and G. S. "The Pancypria" Nicosia founded in 1894. These two clubs were established to organize track racing in Cyprus, following a ban they had from the English, in not having sporting events in the evening hours. These clubs created the athletic venues in which their athletes prepared and along with the athletes of Pafos and Larnaca who founded the clubs G. S. "Koreivos" Pafos and G.S. "Zenon" Larnaca, in 1896 organized the first Pancyprian games.

The games were held during the mayorship of Demosthenes Hatzipaulos, in two days, on 8 and 9 February 1896, in the area of Chrysostomidis, where the Limassol Public Garden was later created and consisted of 9 track and 2 gymnastic events. Two clubs participated and a team champion was named G. S. "The Olympia" depending on his victories. The athletes Anastasios Andreou, Olympia Limassol and Charalambos Nikolaidis, were selected from the Nicosia Pancypria to strengthen Greece's Olympic team at the first Olympic Games in Athens in 1896.

In the same year, these athletes also represented Cyprus in the first Panhellenic games that took place between 9-10 March at the Panathinaikos Stadium in Athens. Also, the national championships of Norway, Hungary and Sweden were first organised in the rest of Europe.
