The Cyprus Cricket Association (CCA) (Greek: Σύνδεσμος Κρίκετ Κύπρου) is the governing body of cricket in Cyprus. It is a member of the European Cricket Council and an associate member of the International Cricket Council since 1999.
History
Cricket has been played in Cyprus for many years, but has mainly been confined to the British Army bases. The first ever Cyprus-based cricket club, Moufflons Cricket Club, was established in 1987. However, with the encouragement of the European Cricket Council to promote cricket throughout Europe, the Cypriot cricket community was encouraged to form its own organisation.
Formation
In response to this encouragement, the Cyprus Cricket Association (CCA) was formed with its own committee and constitution. This marked a significant development in the history of cricket in Cyprus, as it allowed for greater autonomy and self-governance within the sport.
Organization and Activities
The CCA is responsible for organizing the Cyprus national men's cricket team and coordinating cricket activities on the island. Since 2003, the association has been actively involved in promoting cricket across Cyprus, expanding the game into towns, setting up a league with 23 participating teams (including some from British military bases such as Akrotiri, Episkopi, and Dekhelia), and introducing cricket to young people through schools.
Competitions
The CCA organizes the Cyprus cricket championship, which has been running since at least 2003. The championship features 10 teams, including some from British military bases such as Cape and Decelia. In addition to the championship, the association also oversees the Cyprus cricket league, which has a larger number of participating teams.
