Cyprus Cup 1971–72

Cyprus Cup 1971-72

The 1971/72 Cyprus Football Cup was the 30th edition of the Cyprus Cup competition, organized by the Cyprus Football Federation. It took place from April 15, 1972 to June 12, 1972.

Format and Participants

For the first time, third division teams also participated in the competition. A total of 32 teams took part, consisting of:

* The 12 participants in the A' Katīgoria 1971-1972 (first division)
* The 12 participants in the B' Katīgoria 1971-1972 (second division)
* Ten of the eleven participants in the G' Katīgoria (third division), with LALL Lysī being excluded.

Results

The competition consisted of five rounds: first round, eighth finals, quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final. All encounters were played as one-way matches, with any additional or replayed matches taking place at home for the team that drew in the original match. In the event of a tie after extra time, a penalty shootout was used to determine the winner.

Final

The final took place on June 18, 1972 (according to Source 1) / June 11, 1972 (according to Source 3) at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia. However, considering that Source 1 mentions June 18 as the date of the final and Source 3 specifies June 11, it is likely that the correct date is June 18, but with a possible error in one of the sources.

Winner

The winner of the competition was Omonia Nicosia, who defeated Pezoporikos Larnaka in the final. As Omonia also won the championship, the defeated cup finalist qualified for the European Cup winners' competition in 1972/73.
