Cyprus Presidential Election 1983

1983 Cypriot Presidential Election

The 1983 Cypriot presidential election was held on 13 February 1983, to elect the President of the Republic of Cyprus.

Electoral System

The President of the Republic of Cyprus is elected directly by the people through a universal and secret ballot. The President's term of office is five years, commencing on the day of its establishment before the House of Representatives, where the elected president gives the renewed assurance. According to the electoral system, if only one candidate applies for nomination, they are declared elected President of the Republic of Cyprus without a vote. However, when there are multiple candidates, the winner must secure more than 50% of the valid votes. If no candidate achieves this majority, a runoff election is held between the top two candidates on the next day.

Results

The election was won by Spyros Kyprianou, who received 56.5% of the vote with a voter turnout of 95%. He was supported by the Democratic Party and also had the backing of the Progressive Party of the Working People of Cyprus (AKEL). This marked his re-election as President.

Notes

The 1983 presidential election was significant, as it followed a 15-year period during which no candidate other than the incumbent president had been nominated.
