Diether Hopf

Diether Hopf (* 25). November 1933 in Eisenach is a German professor emeritus of school pedagogy from the University of Potsdam.
Childhood and youth
After graduating from high school in Bad Hersfeld, he studied at Philipps University in Marburg, at Freie Universität Berlin and at the University of California in Berkeley. He completed his doctorate in the field of educational science and also achieved his habilitation in this field.
Scientific work
Hopf initially worked as an educator. After that he was a primary school and high school teacher. In 1971 he began to teach at the University/University of Kassel. From 1971 to 1995 he worked as an educational researcher at the Max Planck Institute in Berlin. Since 1995 he has been teaching in Potsdam. Hopf was visiting professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Hopf dealt with questions of the school system. He was particularly interested in the question of how migrant children find their way in the German school system.
Important activities
Hopf pursued numerous socially relevant activities. These include:
Hopf works for the German Education Council. He recommended that there should be school trials with comprehensive school and thus ensured that there are comprehensive schools in Germany today.
Hopf advised Iceland on reforming the school system there.
He was on the founding committee of the Pedagogy and Psychology Departments of the University of Cyprus.
