Dimitris Kontidis is a Greek Cypriot politician. He was Mayor of Limassol and MP in the Limassol Electoral District elected with AKEL in 1991–1996.
Biographical data
Dimitris Kontidis was born in Limassol on 26 October 1935. He graduated in 1954 from Laniteio High School. He obtained a medical degree from the University of Charles with a specialty in otorinolaryngology. He studied on a scholarship from the International Association of Students. In 1968 he returned to Cyprus and opened his own clinic, working as a doctor.
He speaks, beyond Greek, English and Czech.
He is married to Vera Mark Markoullis and has two children.
Path Policy
He was a member of the Provincial Committee of AKEL Limassol and the Central Committee of AKEL for many years.
In the 1986 municipal election he was elected a councillor in Limassol Municipality with AKEL, and was subsequently elected deputy mayor. In the 1991 parliamentary election he was elected MP in the Limassol Electoral District with AKEL for the Sixth Parliamentary Period. He was re-elected in the 1996 parliamentary election for the VII Parliamentary Period. As a Member of Parliament, he served as Vice-President of the Parliamentary Committee on Interior and a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Health and the Parliamentary Committee on Transport and Works.
In the 1996 municipal elections he was elected Mayor of Limassol supported by AKEL and EDEK. He secured 51.20% against 45.96% of the mayor Antonis D. Hatzipaulos until then. He was re-elected in the 2001 Municipal elections by securing 60.11%, supported by AKEL, DIC and EDEK. In 2004-2006 he was president of the Cyprus Municipalities Association.
Social activities
He was a member of the Council of the Limassol Medical Association, a member of the Council of the Medical Corps of the Pancyprian Medical Association, a vice president of the sports association Aris Limassol and a member of the Board of Directors of the Cyprus Sports Organization (KOA).
He was one of the inspirers of the idea of establishing a public university in Limassol and as mayor he pioneered its implementation. The Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK) was created on its mayorship. He also pioneered the establishment of the TEPAK Friends union, whose first president was elected. In February 2012 he was elected first president of the Cyprus University of Technology Council position in which he remained until October 2013.
