Spur Kebitz
Classification and Distribution
The Spur Kebitz (Vanellus spinosus) is a monotypical bird species from the Charadriidae family. It is endemic to Africa and Western Asia.
### Geographic Range
The species occurs in various countries, including Turkey, eastern and northern Syria, Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and East Africa. In Central Europe, it is a rare migrant, with most observations suggesting that these are individual birds rather than part of a larger population.
Physical Characteristics
The Spur Kebitz reaches an adult body length of 25 to 27 centimeters. The bird has striking black and white markings on its head and chest, while the upper side of its body is sandy to grayish brown in color. Its legs are black and protrude beyond the tail during flight.
Behavior
Similar to other Kiebitz species, the Spur Kebitz's flight is slow and deliberate. It is a migratory bird in regions north of Lebanon, but its behavior varies in other areas.
### Habitat and Distribution Notes
While the original source mentions that the Spur Kebitz is found in Colombia and Peru, this appears to be an error, as the species is actually endemic to Africa and Western Asia. The Great African Rift Valley marks a significant boundary for the species' distribution, with it being very rare south of this region.
