Conférence Européenne des Administrations des Postes et des Télécommunications (CEPT)

History

The Conférence Européenne des Administrations des Postes et des Télécommunications (CEPT) is an umbrella organisation for the cooperation of regulatory authorities from 48 European countries, with its main office in Copenhagen, Denmark. CEPT was founded on 26 June 1959 by 19 public postal and telecommunications companies (PTTs).

Establishment of ETSI

In 1988, CEPT members decided to establish the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). This marked a significant development in the history of CEPT, as it aimed to standardize telecommunications technologies across Europe.

Structure and Committees

CEPT has been organized into two main groups:

* **Electronic Communication Committee (ECC)**: Works on radiocommunication and telecommunications. ECC serves as a continuous secretary for the European Radiocommunications Office (ERO).
* **European Radiocommunications Office (ERO)**: Focuses on radiocommunication issues.
* **Committee of the European Mail Rules (CERP)**: Deals with mail-related issues.

Cooperation and Memorandum of Understanding

In 2004, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was renewed between CEPT, ECC, and ETSI. The MoU aims to promote cooperation in the European process between standardization and regulation for radio communication devices and systems. This agreement contributes to the consistent transposition of results from corresponding ECC technical compatibility studies into national regulations.
