Evangelos Averoff-Tositsas
Evangelos Averoff-Tositsas (Ευάγελος Αβέρωφ-Τοσίτσας) (17 April 1910 – 2 January 1990) was a Greek politician, writer, and industrialist of Aroman origin.
Early Life and Education
Averoff-Tositsas was born in Trikala, Thessaly on 17 April 1910. He descended from the Averof family of Metsovo. He graduated with praise from the faculty of Political, Legal, and Economic Sciences at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, where he also earned a Doctorate in Economics.
Career
Averoff-Tositsas was elected to Parliament in 1946. During World War II, he served as a spy for the Greek army against the fascist occupant. He was known for his strong pro-Western and anti-communist views, and was an intimate confidant of former Prime Minister and President Constantine Karamanlis.
Politics
Averoff-Tositsas held several ministerial positions throughout his career. He served as a key figure in the Conservative Party and played a crucial role in convincing the military junta to allow Constantine Karamanlis to return to power. He was also a member of the Greek delegation at the United Nations.
Personal Life
Averoff-Tositsas died on 2 January 1990, at the age of 79, due to a heart attack at the Apolloneion Hospital in Athens. He was remembered as "the creator of the bridge" for his role in facilitating Karamanlis' return to power.
