The first category of men's football 1979 was the 2nd edition of the first category of football of Cyprus under the auspices of the Cyprus Football Federation. The championship was won by APOEL for the first time in his history.
Operating system
10 teams participated in the first-class championship 1979. All teams competed between them twice, once inside and one away. The champion was declared the team that gathered most points.
According to the notice the last two teams were reduced to the Second Division. Olympiacos Nicosia and Apollo Limassol left the event before its completion and so it was these two teams who were demoted. The league was completed with 8 teams.
Score system
Each win was scored by 3 points and every loss by 1 point.
Classification criteria Phase I
The teams were ranked based on the total number of points they won. In case of a tie in the total number of points won by two or more teams higher the team was ranked with the greatest difference between the winners and the lost sets.
