The first category of men's football 2001-02 was the 25th edition of Cyprus's first class football under the auspices of the Cyprus Football Federation. The championship was won by New Salamina for the 7th time in her history.

Operating system
Nine teams participated in the 2001–02 first-class championship. It was held in two phases. In the first phase, all teams competed between them twice, once inside and one away.

According to the first phase ranking series, the first six teams gave each other play off matches for the champion's promotion. In the first round of the play off the teams competed as follows: 3rd-6th and 4th-5th. To qualify for the next round one team of each pair had to achieve 3 wins.

In round II of the play off (final phase) the team that had finished in 1st place faced the couple's winner 4th-5th and the team that finished in 2nd place faced the couple's winner 3rd-6th. To qualify for the next round one team of each pair had to achieve 3 wins.

The winners of the two pairs of the semi-final phase competed with each other to promote the champion. To be declared a champion team had to achieve 4 wins.

All the rounds measured the wins the teams had achieved in the first phase of the league. The series of matches of each pair began at the team seat which finished higher at the end of the first phase of the league and continued alternately in the seats of the two teams until the completion of the phase. The defeated teams of the first round of the play offs were placed in positions 5–6 of the final rankings maintaining the rankings they had at the end of the first phase of the league. The losers of the semifinals gave a single match to the team seat that had finished higher in Phase I. The winner of the race took third place.

Teams that finished in 7th, 8th and 9th place gave play-out matches. In these games the team points were transferred from Phase I. Each team faced the other two of twice, once inside and one away. The two teams with the least points at the end of the play-out were demoted to the second men's football category of Cyprus 2002-03.

Score system
Each win was scored by 2 points and every loss by 1 point.

Classification criteria Phase I
The teams were ranked based on the total number of points they won. In case of a tie in the total number of points won by two or more teams the ranking criteria were:
Higher ranked the team with the greatest difference between the victors and the lost sets.
If the teams had the same difference, the group was ranked higher with the largest fraction resulting from the division of the total winning sets with the total lost sets.
If the tie continued, account was taken of the results of the meetings between the equal groups (in order: points, sets, π
