Historical information
The football was coined in 1895 by American professor William Morgan, working in the branch of Hollock's HAN (YMCA), in the state of Massachusetts, USA. Trying to create a group indoor game, without risk of injuries, he devised volleyball. He first named the game mintonette. The volleyball name was given shortly after a demonstration match, probably by Alfred Halstead.

The new sport spread very quickly, mainly through the Annexes of H.A.N. in the states of the United States and around the world. In Europe it was transferred during World War I by American soldiers.

Originally played with different balls In 1900 the first special volleyball ball was built. In 1947 the International Football Federation (Fédération Internationale de Volleyball or FIVB) was established in Paris, which formulated uniform international regulations. In 1963 a European Football Confederation (Confédération Européenne de Volleyball or CEV) was established. 1964 was an important year for volleyball, after joining the Tokyo Olympiad program, both for men and women!
